this is pretty interesting material! i remember a flood on a july 6th in the 50s. it was my birthday and my party was cancelled because noone could get to my house! my father tried to take us for a drive as an alternative fun thing to do but we could not get anywhere! i grew up in ville saint laurent and after reading this i have a feeling what i remember as a great flood may just have been an ongoing sewer back up problem!!!!

The Canadian Centre for Architecture holds my father's photo albums from his 40+ years with Atlas Construction. The Notre Dame tunnel job was 15,000 feet. He worked on others as well plus the Louis Hipployte Lafontaine Tunnel (I realize that is in a different dimension.) Fonds Victor Landriault, CCA. Feel free to contact me.

It's worth noting that $50 million in 1950s dollars is close to a half billion in today's dollars, just going by CPI. The inflation in the cost of infrastructure construction has probably been much more pronounced than that though. You're right that this really was a massive undertaking, on a much grander scale than Toronto's "25-year plan" for sewer improvement that began to be implemented around the same time.

Donald: No, I haven't had the chance to see anything in NDG yet let alone the northern half of the island. I'll have to look into the one you mentioned though. I'd like to try and get inside the Decarie Raimbault, but I'm still trying to find a convenient spot to get inside of it. It's not always so easy..

Your work is very interesting. Have you explored the old NDG Collector Sewer ?? I beleive it runs along Clanranald to the Back River { Now mNorth Interceptor}. I beleive that it is 11x11 but not big enough and that is why they constructed the Decarie Raimbault. Keep up the good work, but be careful, its dangerous business ! I have had a keen interest in the history of the construction of the Montreal Sewer and Water vinfrastructure. Our co citizens do not realise the magnitude of what has been built over generations ! Montreal underground.
